Title: Hawk at Feeder
Post by: Jayme on January 30, 2009, 10:58:09 AM
Hi, I am new to your forum, inspired by all the photos!

Also new to bird feeding/watching (addicted now....)

3 days ago my husband called as he was home, and a hawk was eating a bird just below my feeder.  He did not have my camera handy.  When I came home, you could still see the feathers in the snow.

A red-tailed hawk had been seen near my house 2X in the last month, so i am pretty sure it was the same one.

Since this "event", the birds seem to have disappeared from my feeder.  (I wouldn't come back either....).  Is there anything I can do to help entice them back?  Or does it just take some time.

Thanks,
Jayme

Jayme, the hawk was more than likely an accipiter --- either a sharp-shinned or a cooper's. They have a relatively longer tail and shorter wings which give them good maneuverability around feeders. It may take a little time for your feeder birds to come back.

Thanks for the reply - I will keep my eye out for the hawks you mentioned.

Sure seems eerily silent out there!
