I live in South West Ontario, and saw this hawk in my backyard the other day. Can anyone tell me what species it could be

thanks,
Mike

Looks like a juvenile Cooper's Hawk to me.

I agree - we have an adult and juvenile Cooper's on a regular basis feeding on song birds the past couple months in our back yard.  I have been able to get some nice pics as they are a little more patient approaching them without distrubing them when feeding...

Today, while looking out the kitchen window and watching a black squirrel that was sitting in the plate of black oil seed having his lunch (I've given up trying to scare them away, it's a losing battle!!!), a Cooper's Hawk came swooping down through the yard in search of a meal just missing the feeders by only a few feet.  The squirrel stood up and took one look at the hawk and fell backwards off the feeder.  OMG!!!  It was so funny to watch.  If only I had the video camera on!!!
