Title: Redpoll
Post by: Greg Schneider on February 25, 2009, 12:08:53 PM
Not sure if this is a hoary or a common. Almost looks like a hoary to me:

I would say a Hoary due to the white band just above the tail and the short beak size.

The short-beak does it for me.

Having seen so many Hoary redpolls (read: three), I like going by the Sibley guide to redpolls.  http://sibleyguides.blogspot.com/2008/01/character-index-for-redpoll.html (http://sibleyguides.blogspot.com/2008/01/character-index-for-redpoll.html)

Hey GStuart
I'll be examining my flock of redpolls more carefully to see if we have any Hoarys. Am thinking there is at least one that meets the criteria.
Greg, I too would say yours looks like it is.

Nice shot and a good bird.  It looks very nice sitting on top of its perch with the snowflakes in the background. I still have yet to see my first hoary.  Maybe I'll be lucky and find one before the winter ends.
