Title: A Purple Martin colony in Stouffville?
Post by: David & Susan on February 27, 2009, 10:14:23 AM
I'm new to Stouffville and I'm considering erecting a Purple Martin house in my backyard, located near the city's downtown sector.

My lot size is quite large with a lot of available airspace but it is not near any bodies of water.

I've been told that with the proper attractors and a bit of luck I can get a colony started.  I've also been told that it's NEVER going to happen due to my location.

Anyone have any advice?

Many thanks,

David

David, I live on Bethesda Rd. just west of McCowan. Ten acre lot with a 2 acre pond. I've had 2 martin houses up for 28 years and have had them nest 3 times --- 1986, 1990 and 1991 but I keep trying. Last year I had 2 visits and 1 fly-by. You could try erecting a martin house but plug the entrance holes until you hear or see martin activity. Give me a call at (905)640-5015 if you want to compare notes.

Better think about getting your Martin house up, David. Martin "scouts" were reported yesterday near Point Pelee and I had tree swallows checking out the boxes around the pond (I hope they don't mind this snow)
