Title: ID help please. egrets
Post by: Twojugs on July 05, 2006, 08:45:30 PM
While jogging through the Hendrie Valley (RBG) in Burlington on Monday night, I saw 5 or 6 white egrets in a tree overlooking the pond at the end of Valley Inn Road. Not having either binos or field guide, I could not identify them. Has anyone seen and identified these egrets?

Thanks

I don't have any knowledge of the Hendrie Valley specifically, but what you saw are almost certainly Great Egrets.  They are becoming increasingly common in Ontario.  The only place I've seen that many together is in the Leamington / Wheatley area.

The only other white egrets that you might find are Snowy & Cattle.  Both are uncommon in Ontario, so the chances of seeing 5 or 6 together would be very remote.
