i will be in LA for the first weekend in April. does anyone know any bird guides in the area? if so, i'd love their contact info so i can hire them for a day.

My wife and I were in LA a couple of years ago.  We didn't do too much birding in LA but Griffith Park has a lot of nice hikes and a lot of potential.  It's a ways out of LA but we also visited the Channel Islands.  Saw our first wild peregrine there.  A neat spot to go it you have the time.
