Title: Amherst Island
Post by: digijay on March 17, 2009, 12:52:53 PM
Can anyone tell me if there is much activity at Amherst this time of year? I have the weekend off and I am thinking of making a trip to the island.

hey I just went with a co-worker on the 9th, there were no owls to be seen, lots of hawks, woodpeckers and plenty of chickadee's ready to lauch themselves into your hand for sunflower seeds, we saw a couple deer and there were reports of a white phased gryfalcon going between amherst and wolfe island. If you have a long drive I would say no, esp since it's the march break and everyone and their cousin will prolly be there stirring things up, but if it's a short drive for you than I would recomend going to see it. Make sure you wear water proof shoes.

I managed to locate just 3 Sawwhet owls in the main owl woods area last Saturday.

Sorry for the late post, I was at my cottage and do not have intenret access but on Thursday I visited Amherst Is. and found 6 snowy owls, three on the ice on the ferry over, and 3 on the island. I did not see any other owls but many rough-legged hawks, probably 20+, not quite as many harriers but several adult males, a few red tails, a sharpie and a kestrel.

I am planning on going to Amherst Island 18th April. Will I be too late to see owls?
