Title: Male Wood Duck at Lake Wabukayne - Mississauga

Hi everyone.  Out for a nature walk and birding this afternoon at Lake Wabukaye (NE corner of Glen Erin/Windwood behind condo and school).  Saw a beautiful male Wood Duck at the far East end of the lake (closest to Erin Mills Pkwy).  Also saw my first Grackle of the year!  

Lots of Red-winged Blackbirds, Mallards and Canada Geese.  

I used to see a Mink at this location many years ago but haven't seen him for a long time.

The wood duck was still there today, tho' at the West end of the lake.
Kingfisher also seen.

Cool!  8)  Usually he's there at the West end of the lake so it was surprising to see him at the East end right next to a female and male Mallard on the grassy hill.

That's great!  Did you happen to see if it was the male or female Kingfisher?  Lake Wabukayne is the only park in Mississauga that I've ever seen a female Kingfisher at!

The wood duck was with the mallard pair cruising the lake. I was ready to leave the area and took one last look back at the lake and spotted the trio and could barely believe my good luck when I trained my bins on them.
I did not see any rusty band on the kingfisher.
I haven't seen a kingfisher since 2007 (used to see one regularly at the little park in Norval, but not last year) so I was really happy today.
In 2006 I was down in the Rio Grande Valley (Texas side) near McAllen, and saw both the green and ringed kingfisher on an alligator pond - good for the life list! If anyone wants to know great areas for birding in that area I can fill you in. The green jays alone are worth seeing.

Hey..

According to a very good source of mine, (Dec 2007) there was a Male and Female "Wood Duck" at "Wabukayne". The female disapeared.

A male appeared again late last year and spent  December and possibly most of the winter in the area.

There was a Mandarin Duck in the Pond as well..

Those are really great shots. Now if we can only get the wood duck to interbreed with the mandarin duck!!
