Those are superb shots! You will have to give me some pointers on how to catch those terns - I made myself crazy trying to get a flight shot of them a couple of wknds ago, I got lots of beaks and butts but nothing in the middle in most of the frames :-)  

...even grackles look interesting that close, you have inspired me to chase the ones around my yard and see what I can get from them!

...and where were you to have a snowy?

Thanks for the kind comments. The Snowy Owl was on the east end of Amherst Island on the Kingston Field Naturalist property. The way I get decent flight shots is to have the camera setup on Auto Focus Continous and a lense that is stabilized. Nikon D50 w/80-400vr hand held.

Wonderful photos JTF, especially the head shot of the Grackle.
Though... I think I would ID that one as a Common Grackle and the first one looks more like a breeding Caspian Tern.
What do you think?

Very nice shots indeed.

A boat-tailed Grackle in Ontario would cause a small stampede :)

Thanks JTF - unfortunately you are one up on lens length - I have the a D40 and a 70-300 VR, it doesn't have C mode capabilities.  I should try shooting on the "sports" setting, but was on AP when we were watching the Caspians and Bonapartes at Rondeau 2 wks ago.  

....We were going to buy me new gear before migration started but I can't decide between the D90/D300 and whether I want the 80-400 or something fixed and longer that will take a TC....so I didn't get anything, we leave for Pelee and Rondeau in a week and I am starting to second guess myself (((sigh)))

...there's always next year!  (3yrs ago I thought my D40 would be the only camera I would ever need LOL)

Yep, I've seen these on the Texas Birding Trail, not the GTA. They are more round-headed.
