Title: Akendo Park Mississauga Lake Shore
Post by: K B Warburton on April 26, 2009, 08:28:31 PM
Akendo Park - This is a very narrow greenbelt and creek on either side of Lakeshore right at the bottom of Winston  Churchill.
Ruby-Crowned Kinglets (many), Common Mergs, Yellow Warblers,  Black-Throated Green Warblers,  (many),  Nashville Warbler, Yellow-Rumped Warblers (many), White-Throated Sparrows (everywhere), Belted King Fisher, TVs,  Northern  Flickers, Pileated Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker,  Wood Ducks (nesting).

For those who may be interested,
Two weeks ago I spotted a beautiful, brilliant white, total Albino Muskrat in this area. I watched it and it’s mate (normal brown) working on a lodge on the opposite side of the stream.  Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera and I haven’t seen it since. I also saw a mink (a predator of muskrat) in the area that same day so who knows???

Cool.  I haven't checked out parks down in that area for ages.

You missing out :)
That park is a well known migrant trap, also nearby going east on Lakeshore road is Lakeside Park, i found a male Prairie Warbler there on Saturday.
Some very good migrant traps through that area

I used to go fairly often to Lakeside Park years ago and would always end up seeing something during every visit - lots of interesting birds and wildlife in that area!  It's fun talking with the dogs at the leash-free area there as well.

Hmmm, today's forecast ... afternoon:  sunny and 25c.   :D

Title: Arkendo Park

I stopped by for a brief visit - what a great place for birding !
Saw many of the same birds you mentionned with the lakefront showing lots and lots of birds .
I parked in the circle at the end of Arkendo Rd. and walked to the lakefront along the path behind the houses . Is this the best parking area ?
Thanks for putting me onto the park. I live about a 5 minute drive from the park and never knew it was there .

To all discovering this area... just west of Arkendo on Lakeshore & across the street, the 'park' continues as Joshua Cr. Pk. (signage on Lakeshore) Access is a parking lot west of the entrance to the sewage plant which usually doesn't smell. It is possible to follow the creek including under Lakeshore from the lake to at least Ford Dr. in Oakville. A little hidden gem.
