Title: Pine siskins

Hey!!

It is pretty chilly this morning up here in Tiny township after yesterday's monsoon style rain. There is a large group of Pine Siskins in the trees next door. They have been visiting my feeder as well. (shouldn't they be well north by now?) Also have Red Breasted Nuthatches.

I spent some time yesterday trying to ID a bird on sound alone. Internet is great for that. I could not spot it but I could hear it... I think it was an Oriole.. but it was doing something a little bit different between calls..

Pine Siskens are still here too (just a little northeast of you)

With the summer like weather today :wink: .....it's not surprising that they haven't left yet.

The Orioles will sometimes mix in an extended but rapid "rat tat tat" sound......perhaps that is what you heard in between calls.

Or, could it have been a male Rose Breasted Grosbeak? They have a similar Robin like song.

Hey!!

Yoo still Have Siskins as well !!    We were North of Wasaga overnight..  and Spotted them up there near the beach.

As for the bird call I don't think it was a Rose breasted, they make a sound like "quink" at the end of each or most calls.

This sounded Robin like but deeper then occasionally it  at the end it would  do a  real fast "yip yip yip yip" .

We are still getting our daily flock of 30 or so Pine Siskens here in Georgetown. I thought it was because we are feeding them too well and they decided to stay the summer.

Haven't had any orioles yet this year, very unusual for us but two pairs of red breasted grosbeaks are now regulars

I still have a nice flock of pine siskens working my niger feeder in Milton north. My niger tube only lasts 5 hrs these days.

ATM 3 male rose breasted grosbeaks are arguing over who's feeding station this is.

Errr sorry RKD i might be stunting the migration of BOs to georgetown. I still have 4 males battling for the area  :oops:

Faltarvo,
I know what you mean with the quick emptying of bird feeders. I'm sure we have spent more on bird food this winter then on  groceries.
And BTW thanks for sending over one of your BO. He arrived late afternoon today, visiting one of my hummingbird feeders. Those went up quickly today when I saw our first hummingbird of the year. Gotta love this time of year.

Our Pine Siskens left this week and it's been sooo quiet. I guess the upside is the money we'll be saving on not refilling our feeders (4 niger seed, 3 sunflower, 1 peanut) at least once a day. Odd thng is the gold finches have really cut back too. Maybe someone else has better seed.

we are  up North of Wasaga again,, Tiny township..

Funny you should mention Siskins. we arrived today around noon.. Feeders empty. No Siskins.

The sounds are interesting..  you can't see any birds..  I think I hear a Great Crested flycatcher.. (Only from last years experience)

A Cardinal..something we didn't see or hear up here last year.

I think I heard a Pine warbler today as well..

Before we left Milton today we spotted a Ruby Throat hummer in our yard (rare for our place).. at our bleeding heart flowers  .

Yeah, I've still got about 15 but they're dwindling down from over 40. Expensive proposition these birds. Between the House Wrens, B Orioles and RB Grossbeeks, I can hardly hear anything else. At 5am the E. Phoebe's wakes me up as they've nested right above my bedroom window. The pair of RB Woodpeckers have decided to stay here permanently it seems from last winter. I made a list of all the birds around my house since Jan /09 and the count is now 46. It's nice living on the Bruce, do come up folks.

Here in southern Scarborough, our pair of Siskins has now grown to three.  A younger Siskin has now joined the pair that's been in the neighbourhood for the last four months, I'm assuming it's their little one.

Although they were backlit by the sun and they only perched atop a spruce for a moment before moving on, I'm pretty sure the three or four birds I saw at Mount Pleasant Cemetery yesterday were Pine Siskins.

I have not had Pine Siskins before this winter at our feeder.  However this winter a large flock came perhaps in November, and stayed until recently.  Today there was one lone Pine Siskin at our feeder.  The flocks are gone.
