Title: At least 6 nesting Great Blue Herons
Post by: skyviewer on May 15, 2009, 07:07:42 PM
In a forest that is all swampy in and around it i have taken some photos of a couple herons and seen them occassionally from the road.  A couple days ago i went for a hike into the forest where i seen them.  I only was able to go part way in because i didn''t have rubber boots or waders on.  I counted 6 nesting great blue herons in an area less than an acre.  I would guess the numbers might be a little more closer to ten because there were a number of other nests that i couldn't get a close look to see if there were any birds in them.  This is in Whitby

Is this what they call a rookery? ( sp) If so is there any other Ont species of bird that does this?

A rookery never heard of that before.  I can say i've seen a couple of Canada Geese nesting in the same close proximity before.   but i'd have to say i've never seen any other birds do this
