Title: Anyone else seen the Rose-breasted Grosbeak in North Mississ
Post by: macman_canada on May 20, 2009, 09:47:05 AM
I had two of them come visit my feeder about a week or two ago! Beautiful bird, but haven;t seen him back since, just the one day.....

I live in the Mississauga Road and Derry Area (Levi Creek).

Would love to have him back!!

Hey, macman_canada, long time no talk!!!

Haven't seen any Grosbeaks anywhere in Mississauga yet this Spring.  Bummer!   :(

Sorry, for some reason, I'm unable to open and look at your photo.

If you're in the mood to venture around the corner to Lake Aquitaine (SE corner Glen Erin/Aquitaine Ave. behind the community centre), just a few minutes away from you! at the moment there are 5 goslings with 2 adults.  Have been seeing male Yellow Warblers, male Yellow-rumped Warbler, Great Blue Heron, Caspian Terns, etc.  Lots of the "usual" (Cardinals, Grackles, Mallards, Red-winged Blackbirds, Robins, Starlings, etc.)

Down at Lake Wabukayne (NE corner Glen Erin/Windwood Dr. behind school and condo), there's one Black-crowned Night Heron.  What's going on lately down there at that lake?  There are usually lots of birds there but during my last couple of visits, seeing only one or two birds.  Very odd.

Just copy paste it into your web browser...

Are they common in our area?

Thank You.  Nice photos!

I've only ever seen a few male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and they were at Erindale Park many years ago.  Gorgeous birds!

Re: Indigo Bunting ... once again, at Erindale Park many years ago.  One time, saw 14 of them just North of the Burnhamthorpe Bridge, on West (left) side of main trail.

Re: above RBG's and IB's ... have never seen any at Lake Aquitaine or Lake Wabukayne.  I'm only at Meadowvale Conservation Area about once or twice a year so not sure what's up there at the moment.  I also haven't seen any at Rattray Marsh, Riverwood Park or Erindale Park (recently).

At Erindale Park and Riverwood Park at the moment:  lots of birds, deer, raccoons, groundhogs with babies, frogs, turtles, snakes, etc.  An exciting time of year!  :D

Our next door neighbour's backyard has over 6 different bird feeders and is a magnet for different bird varieties.

Last week my wife saw a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak in one of their backyard trees.  I, unfortunately, was too slow and missed it.  :(

That's a bummer re: missing it.  A wonderful sighting for your wife though.

Title: Ever since I put in my new feeder..

and changed my bird seed to one from the bird store in etobicoke, I get a tonne of birds!! They really seem to like the Arundale bird cafe!! I have had as many as 10 or so birds feedin together!! I highly recommend it!! You can see it in some of the pics I posted. Expensive (about $100) plus the squirrel baffle on the bottom from the US. I get purple finches, house finches, gold finches, cardinals, chickadee's, nut htaches  and even a pair of woodpeckers! I even had a blue jay back again..... very uncommom since I don't have any peanuts in the mix anymore...

I hope I get the rose breasted back, they are amazing! A little bossy when feedin though!! LOL!!

There are 2 year round Blue Jays here at Lake A.  Beautiful to see back in the Winter with their bright blue against the white snow.  Lately, they are sitting in a pine tree out back of the building and waking me up at 5am.  Cripes!

I saw a rose-breasted grosbeak last week in Morningside Park Forest, way over on the other side of town.  Looks like it's wearing a bandana around its neck!
