Title: Unknown Birds - assistance required, thanks
Post by: What was that? on June 05, 2009, 01:43:11 PM
Four pictures, three birds to ID if possible.

I think the bedraggled one may be a female grosbeak (based on size, colour and beak shape)
The second one I have no idea (one flying and one swimming).
The third one (it found me at the Brickworks) was way too far away, this is all I got.

Thanks for your time and brain work.

Hi there and welcome.

Your second bird is a Common Goldeneye.

#3 looks like a Blue Jay.

My thanks.

My first thought for #3 was a Blue Jay, but the book shows a white face. I didn't know that they come with dark face (it doesn't seem to be shadow).

It's tough when the birds are backlit or shot against a brighter background. Your eyes can compensate for it, but not the camera.

The unknown bird next to the merganser is a female common golden-eye. I definitely agree that your 4th pic is a blue jay. The first one is tough, with no sign of wing bars, etc. Female grosbeak could be possible.
