This is so amazing that you posted this!  I live at the corner of Bloor and High Park and while on the phone this morning I casually turned around to look out the balcony and there, standing on our balcony railing, was a type of bird you describe.  I immediately went out to get a closer look but it flew away.  I didn't get a close enough look to comment but it was definitely red and yellow and very unusual for me to see such a thing on the balcony.

a friend mentioned it to me. I could not provide more info except that this bird is definitely not common in this area.

You might try showing your friend a picture of a Great Crested Flycatcher and asking "was this it?"  Alternately, have a picture of Big Bird from Sesame Street.

maybe it is a young male scarlet tanager - sometimes they are not completely red but have yellow patches as well
