Title: Chukars in Ontario?
Post by: BC on June 07, 2009, 10:54:08 AM
A friend of mine is convinced that he has observed a pair of Chukars nesting in the Hespeler area. He's not a birder but he is a good observer. He says they are definitely not Gray Partridge.

Is anyone aware of Chukars in Ontario?

Chukar, Sharp-tailed Grouse and other game birds are released so they can be hunted or as practice for hunting dogs. Most of the Bobwhite records recorded in the last atlas are considered to be released birds.

Not sure if they are wild in ontario but people to keep them like chickens so they may have just escaped. The range map at
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Chukar/id (http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Chukar/id) shows them only extreme western United States.

I had one last year on Neilson Ave just south of Finch.

Certainly a couple of escapee's starting a nest would be interesting.

Thanks for the feedback. I looked at Sibley and the range doesn't indicate any Chukars this side of the Mississippi. I'm going to pass this thread on to my friend. I'll encourage him to try for a photo.
