Hello,
Yesterday I saw what I thought was a woodpecker. It was smaller (half the size) and less colourfull than a pileated woodpecker, but 5x the size of a thorny woodpecker.
its colours reminded me of a mourning dove - it was grey on top. but it had a spotted/speckled white and black chest.
guessed it was a woodpecker due to its location (on a dead tree) and how it looked like it was walking vertically up the branch like woodpeckers tend to do.
any guesses?

Sounds like a Northern Flicker to me.
