Title: Birds from the cottage
Post by: Misty01 on August 18, 2009, 03:50:23 PM
My husband and I just spent the week up north by Perry Sound and found some feathered friends around the lake.
Sorry about the blur, but the eagle wouldn't let us close enough for a clear shot  :(
I hope you enjoy anyhow!

Thanks Jimmy,

My husband believes the eagle was 3rd - 4th year; as it had a lot of white in the body and a little brown/grey to the head feathers and the yellow bill.
The merlin we believe has been there for a while; he was quite content to sit and watch my husband cast a spinner bait while I took pictures of him for a good 10 min.
We really enjoyed seeing them and were able to point them out to other birders on the lake :D
They said it was the first year that they have seen an eagle on the lake.

Thanks for the corrections - yes I see the feather tufts on the neck - one of the ID's of the osprey .

Title: The Osprey does not look like a juvenile.

Adult Ospreys call back and forth all the time. They can be a very vocal couples.

Why it is not a juvenile.

Young of the year Ospreys have extensive white scaling on their backs and tops of their wings. This scaling is quite visible from a long distance.
it is absent in this Osprey.
