i set up a backyard feeder. the birds won't come near it! hanging it about 8 feet off the ground from a tree branch. relatively visible.

At break this morning I was outside.. was really surprised to see a very large group of Jays fly over. 30 plus..

They were heading towards the new ponds at Downsview park.. There is grass growing there now..

Had a mystery bird aswell... looked like a starling was brownish and had white outer tail feathers sang a loud four note song..

No bins darn..it

yogistewart... try Black oil seeds..

But for feeding I have 2 feeders 1 is only Nyjer seed and the other is Black sunflower and finch seed, I also make a hideaway by pilling up brush and sprinkling finch seed throughout it!! This works great I had 20 to 30 WTsp in it this morning

And in 3 years I have gone from 0 to 19 Mooring doves over wintering I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not but the wintering hawks like them ..

Napper was your mistery bird a Rusty Black bird ??

i have a hopper feeder and am using a seed mix. hidewayas may not work, since the squirrels in my 'hood are insane.

Blue Jays
Common Grackles
White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows
1 Flicker
Downy Woodpeckers
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers
White-breasted and Red-breasted Nuthatches
Cardinals
Mourning Doves
Chickadees
1 Junco
Robins
Red-winged Blackbirds
Goldfinches
I put out suet, which is on an arm of the feeder pole and out of reach of the squirrels. Lots of birds hang on the cage and eat it. I also have a bird bath, which is still being used for drinking and bathing. There were six White-throats having a pool party in it the other day.

After reading a birding report today from T.O. a little investigation. The bird I saw at Downsview was an Eastern Meadowlark.
Listened to the song on the "Cornell birding site" and it was a match..

A White Breasted Nuthatch has taken up residence in our back yard. Visits the feeders all of the time.

had woodpeckers, juncos, nuthatches, cardinals, millions of sparrows and finches, blue jays, etc.
nothing exotic but i was surprised by the frequency of the woodpeckers.

Post by: Howieh on October 30, 2009, 09:26:43 PM: I've been following this thread with interest and I was about to ask where the waxwings went since I hadn't seen any around my place for several weeks. Well guess what!? About 4pm this aft I was waiting out front for my lady love (happens a lot!) when the robins and waxwings arrived en mass to gorge themselves on the cherry tree beside my driveway. Took lots of pictures but the light was very bad and I suspect there will be very few keepers; too bad because the waxwings were so busy eating I was able to get pretty close to them. Hopefully they will return tomorrow.

Mostly sparrows, chickadees and hissing cardinals at the back feeder but I have also seen bluejays, goldfinches, kinglets, juncos and downy woodpeckers as well.
