Title: Yellow Bellied Sapsucker

Hello everyone,  I was happy to spot my first Yellow Bellied sapsucker today, but sadly it was a window strike bird.  It was a female, and located near Yonge and Sheppard,  I believe the address of the building was 110 Shepard Ave. East.   I am frustrated with this building because within a space of 20 feet, there was 6 window-strike dead birds.   There was 5 chickadees and the 1 sapsucker.    Does anyone know who to contact to report this?  the window of this specific building are highly reflective, and perhaps the building could be  pressured legally or by an organization, to turn off the lights at night, or add bird of prey silhouettes to some of their windows to lesten the risk of migrating birds flying into this building.

Let's do what we can to help our little migrating friends be safe.   I have picture evidence if you know who I could send it to.

Hi James,

That's so sad.  

You can contact FLAP http://www.flap.org/ (http://www.flap.org/) (Fatal Light Awareness Program). They have volunteers that monitor buildings like these, gathering the birds that have hit windows.  They may already know about this building, and if not it would be good to alert them to it.

what would i do?

i would ask to speak to the property manager.
state your concern.
and hand him a bag of the dead birds, say you are leaving it up to him to do something about it, wish him a good day and leave.

I have a window that claims a few birds -- most survive...but a few have perished over the years...what can I do? Those silhouettes don't seem to work...

Wild Birds Unlimited sells these decals, which are supposed to work much better than the silhouettes:

I have heard good things but have never tried them myself.

If you use silhouettes, they should go on the OUTSIDE of the window.  You are trying to break up the reflection on the outer surface.  Alternately, you  could hang "ribbons" (or something similar) outside the window so there would be some movement in the breeze.
