I think that these may be Downey Woodpeckers but i'm not sure , can anyone help me out .

sure look like yellow-bellied sapsuckers to me, nice photo btw

Thank You ,  my book is not the best for bird identification , I need to get a Sibleys . The sapsuckers don't seem to look anything like the pictures I took.

no problem :) the Sibley's is a very good guide, even the little pocket one.
How i got sapsucker is there is not enough white on the back ,downys and hairys have a big white patch on the back ,these woodpeckers don't. You have a juvenile with the brown head and a female with the red cap ,probably mother and kid :) ,where and when you take them? Have seen sapsuckers breed in the Long point area so are around but usually just see them the most during migration.

Thanks for the help Andrew. I took several pictures of these birds at Gull Lake near Minden. I was  investigating some birds making funny noises and scared off  a Hawk , which I did not know was there . They must have been chirping at the Hawk and didn't seem to mind  me taking their pictures . I guess I'm the lesser of two evils .
