Title: Small bird, dark stripe with some white, Nuthatch?
Post by: Raven11:11 on November 04, 2009, 02:11:05 PM
We saw a new bird on our feeder today, I just got a quick look as it flew very fast and is smaller than a Junco,
.. Small bird, dark stripe with some white.  small short tail, longer than usual beak. Any ideas?

Yes, however the coloring is different than what see on google images,  the Wren i saw had a dark line along its side & lighter feathers on its belly ...

Actually it may have been a Nuthatch too ... I just referred to my field guide to birding and it may be the brown headed nuthatch .. he was too fast to get a close look and would not stop in 1 place too long. and the tail was VERY VERY short*

Look at the range map in your field guide.

As above, refer to your Field Guide for the range map (if it has one) of the Brown-headed Nuthatch, they do not and have not come in to the province of Ontario ever.

Happy Birding!

It sounds like a Red-breasted Nuthatch.  They are reasonably common, but they don't come to (my) feeders very often.  They are often found in mixed flocks of chickadees, kinglets and creepers.

It seems to have been some kind of "spoof" according to someone who went there too see it.
