I need some ID help please. There were 2 birds in the feeder at sunirise, the male was dark gray backed, with red breast and throat , not as red as a cardinal though, with the finch beak. The female a softer paler red belly with gray back and head.
Any thoughts? :?:

Rose-breasted Grosbeak might fit the bill :) Have you tried looking up female Cardinal?
What colour is the head?
-
What size were the birds?
My first thought was Red-breasted Nuthatches if they were small.
:)

Thanks for your help, I have confirmed they are Cardinals, male and female. Both returned this early am at sunrise to feed, their twits were recognizable and I had a much longer viewing. The male's back colouring is a greyish tone and this is what threw me off.
Best of birding,
Jonah.

Kin,
this post should probably be moved to the "Bird ID" forum.
