Title: moon nov 30/09

this was an experiment to compare the canon 500 mm lens,to my televue np-101,4 in refractor,i normally use for astro-work. was shot,using a tripod,of course.i first tried the 1.4x extender,but lots of ghosting,and flaring,due no doubt,to too many glass surfaces.the lens,by itself proved satisfactory,and i was quite pleased with the results.
canon 40-d/500 mm f/8 iso 200 1/800 sec.

Hmm...  This is with stacked 2x and 1.4x:

Seems pretty good I think.  It's from Nov 6 by the way.

pretty good.you may want to try,a tad slower exposure,as to not blow out the highlights,or some shadow/highlights,to balance those bright areas out.just my 2 cents.

Thanks.  Actually, full moon shots are difficult because the light is too flat to show details.  Mine is much easier to do.

Thanks for the pointer.  Actually the highlights aren't really blown, but there just weren't enough contrast in those area to show much details.  So instead of cutting the high highlight, I've lowered the low highlight and high mid gray.   The image link above has been updated.  Seems to be quite a bit snappier overall.

sure is andy.yes they can be tough.i,ve got folders full of them,that i,ve gathered over the last 5 years.the fun part is when the terminator line is showing(any phase but full,or new),and you use a cheap modified web-cam,to get in close,and shoot craters,and mountain ranges.of course you need a telescope,and a tracking mount to do so.
