Title: High Park Hawk Watch - 2338 Raptors - REVISED
Post by: Anonymous on September 20, 2006, 08:24:15 PM
Good evening guys

Following are the raptor counts for High Park today as well as some high lights of other species seen.

Turkey Vulture - 16
Osprey - 3
Northern Harrier - 19
Sharp-shinned hawk - 185
Cooper's Hawk - 8
Broad-winged Hawk - 2041
Red-tailed Hawk - 17
American Kestrel - 49

The day started out with almost 100% cloud cover and by mid-morning we were hiding under a tree to get out of the rain but most of us hung in there and we were rewarded with the above Raptors as well as the following species.

Chimney Swift - 36
Canada Goose - 317
American Goldfinch - 28
Chipping Sparrow - 42
Common Grackle - 162
Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 3 zipping past
Blue Jay - 92
CACKLING GOOSE - 1 - With canada Geese
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER - 1 - an adult bird flying west
EVENING GROSBEAK - 1 - flying west - thanks to Bob Yukich
Common Loon - 67

Another nice outing thanks to the 18 or so spotters and counters. I would like to name them but I do not know all the names so not to leave anyone out I will name none, but of course Naish McHugh and Don Barnett were the Raptor Watch officials present and co-ordinating as usual.

Title: Kettling hawks over downsview 12:00 pm
Post by: Napper on September 21, 2006, 08:55:29 PM
Hey guys

I realize that the qty I saw today  is nowhere near what your seeing down at the  Lake shore but today over CFB Downsview there were quite a few hawks 20 or more  soaring on thermals.  I generally do not bring bino's to work but I might start  just doing that..(Way to high to I.d.)   At lunch today they rolled out the 88% scale replica of the Avro arrow or CF-105 from the paint Shop.  I am waiting patiently for the images to be sent to me. If anyone is interested I can post them later, It is quite impressive..

At home it is very quiet (yes, I spelled it correct this time). Only a few Chickadees and some Bluejays plus one unidentified Accipiter. I tried to grab a shot of the thing, in the process I think I scared a  a couple of people walking along the pathway behind my house with my camera. (The cursing didn't help)

Title: Avro Arrow
Post by: surfinbird on September 22, 2006, 10:38:22 AM
Hi there Mr. napper
I would be very interested in seeing some of the Avro Arrow posted . Too bad the Americans made us scrape it. I have also heard a rumour that one of the planes took off for points unknown [USA] in the middle of the night . Sorry about being off topic .

From reading the posts by the hawk counters I'd say north west.
