Title: Great Blue Heron at Bluffers Park
Post by: jjmb on December 20, 2009, 12:37:26 PM
Out this morning for a walk and saw a GBH by the drainage ponds. I'm worried about it because the ponds are now frozen and I'm not sure what it is eating. If any of you are in the park, please keep an eye out for it. I will be going away for a few days, so won't be able to monitor it. It was perfectly able to fly (at least for short distances), which is why I haven't called TWC yet, as you can't approach it at all without it flying off.

If you see it's condition worsening, please call TWC.

Quite normal for them to over winter where there is little or no water available.  They will feed on other food sources such as mice during this time of year, as well as minnows that get frozen into the ice.

Seen yesterday up in Aurora.

This morning, I saw a GBH flying past my livingroom window heading in a North-East direction.
