Hey

I am having trouble with this I.d.

It is a winter Gull, that is obvious :roll:. The Black legs and Bill are what I am having trouble with.  Nothing In my guide matches it.

We are vacationing  in FLA.

I would say that it's a Laughing Gull. I don't have experience of the species myself, but according to my book it should have black bill and legs and grey wash on the nape in the winter.

The Laughing gull(s) are everywhere along this beach.  Pretty neat place. "Bradenton beach"

lots of Brown pelicans directly in front of our rental place

We almost hit a Wood Stork today with our vehicle as it casually strolled across the street.

It was smart enough to pause in the middle of the road as we passed it :shock:

Hi Napper, have you seen any Royal terns or Black skimmers? In the past I've seen quite a few of these around Port Charlotte and neighbouring beaches. Gasparilla island esp. good for the terns. A good spot to go at sunset is Ponce de Leon park at Punta Gorda, I've seen  various heron here.
A great place is the Venice Rookery (not easy to find but worth the effort.) North on US 41, take 1st left on Annex after Jacaranda.

thanx for the info..I don't think we will be traveling too far from here.  There is lots to do on this little Island.

There are Terns zippin up and down the beach all of the time.. I'll get to them later.


RfI number two,

Is this a Northern Gannet Juvenile?  There were two or three of them.. They were diving from great heights into the water after fish.
too far from shore to get any better shots..

Last day here.

Hoping to find a few more "Terns". Apparently this island has a healthy population of "Red Knots" as well..

I have it labeled as a"Plover" but after a closer look "Sanderling" might be the correct call can someone help?

Heavy, black bill; black legs, grey back, black shoulder... it looks like a Sanderling to me.

Only One question left..

What  type of Cormorant is this?  My Peterson guide is not very detailed  I left my National Geographic  bird guide up North.. and I've looked all over the web

It looks like a first year Double-crested Cormorant.

OK..

I wasn't sure about that  The first year DC cormorants I viewed had more orange/ yellow  behind the the bill and below the eyes..

It is also very grey looking. Might have been the lighting was pretty cloudy that day..
