Title: Return to Amherst Island
Post by: Moira on December 29, 2009, 05:15:42 PM
I braved the cold today and went back to Amherst Island looking for owls again.  Thank goodness for hand warmers, which by the way will also warm up your battery when it dies as you are shooting a boreal owl - it did not last long today.  If you haven't been, the owl woods are very close and it's hard to get a clean shot - no doubt why the owls like it!  Both owls are first sightings for me, so well worth the visit.  I love the LEO!  Short-eared owls were flying overhead, but I couldn't get a shot.  Did not see a Snowy today.  Going back to work is going to kill me!

Good find with the Boreal, it is one species high on most birders want lists. They mainly are found in our northern boreal forests. I wouldn't be surprised that once word gets out IE: B-Mail etc some of our neighbours to the south NJ; Pen; NY etc will show up as they did last year.

Paul:  I didn't realize it was that rare a find - makes it all the sweeter!
Denis:  I so hear you about the job - being able to go out during the week is wonderful.
Misty:  I hope you are lucky too and I am still game to go again (hopefully when it's a touch warmer).
