Title: caught in the act *** not for weak stomaches ***
Post by: Misty01 on January 05, 2010, 03:55:44 PM
Here's my backyard sharpie caught in the act of defeathering one of my feeder regulars. I think I'm down one dove, but didn't catch it till he'd picked it clean. Oh how I love my kitchen window in winter  :D

Thanks for the comments. I am not really sad over it as we have too many doves hanging about. If it was my cardinals...well then I'd be upset but tis life! Glad you enjoyed the photo's, it's hard to get a good shot through the window sometimes :D
Title: Cooper's or Sharpie
Post by: thouc on January 06, 2010, 09:41:42 AM
Nice pictures Misty.

I'm not completely sure, but this looks like a Cooper's Hawk to me. The head looks big and there's a contrast between the back and the darker crown in this bird, which according to my book are characters for Cooper's Hawk.

thanks Thomas!
I always have a hard time with the id between the two.
Someone posted a good id indicator here somewhere; I'll look for it again to referance.
Usually I just go by size and if the tail is squared at the bottom or rounded

Hey Crystal,
Cool shots.
I like #1 the best.
As for what kind?
I can never tell.
They are just great to photograph whichever one they are.
