Title: first bird of 2010
Post by: Tyler on January 05, 2010, 07:57:05 PM
title says it all

Mine was Common Raven sw of bancroft.

With the almost complete absence of a cone and berry crop in central ontario. Birds are few and far between away from feeders.

previous year firsts included common redpoll, house sparrow, mourning dove, black-capped chickadee, dark-eyed junco and long-eared owl ( it was also my last bird of the year preceding. It was perched outside my window hunting rodents at the feeder)

long-eared owl ( it was also my last bird of the year preceding. It was perched outside my window hunting rodents at the feeder) - very cool  :D
My first bird of 2010 was a dark eyed junco at the feeder and the next visitors were my cardinal pair.

Wow, amblesider, what a start to this year. Talk about how to make us Ontarians green with envy! I did see one Anna's in 2008 south of Tucson in Ramsay Canyon. Actually that one week I saw a total of 7 different hummers to the lone Ruby throated we get to see here. (I think my New Year's resolution should be to learn how to post pics on  this website!) And in October 2009 I was delighted to see a Costa's near Phoenix.
Here in wintery Brampton my first birds were my flock of A. goldfinches.
This morning I also had a couple of mourning doves, a few juncos and a charming little rabbit.
Cheers. Margaret

I scanned the sky from our 18th floor downtown condo all day in the hopes of spotting one of our local Red-tailed Hawks. Then, a European Starling flew by and claimed the honour of my first bird of 2010.
My favorite first bird was a male Lesser Antillean Bullfinch in 2008. We took a last-minute cheap package to St. Kitt's. The Bullfinches had breakfast with us on the balcony every morning. We'd tear open a grape or a section of orange and they'd enjoy it at arm's length.
