Tuesday January 12/10 seen 2 male buffleheads with one female
and a female Hooded Merganser

do these birds usually stick around for the winter?or was the merganser left behind?

Hi Irene,

"Hoodies" are often around Lake Ontario in the wintertime.  Like most ducks, they don't really need warm temperatures to survive, just open water.  Head down to Humber Bay Park on any day in the wintertime and you're likely to see the "trifecta" of mergansers!

Trifecta = red breasted mergansers, common mergansers, hooded mergansers. :)
