The size of the bird has nothing to do with its age.
There is a size differance between the sexes (males are smaller), and there is a size differance between the various subspecies of Red-tailed Hawk.
Age:(eastern subspecies) Tail of juvenile- brown, Tail of adult- red
Eye colour- The iris is yellow in a juvenile and darkens as the bird ages.

Wow -  how close did you get to him?  I can't seem to get anywhere near a hawk.
