Title: Hovering Hawk
Post by: Napper on October 10, 2006, 11:09:56 PM
Today on my way home on the "Go"

I spotted a large hawk "hovering" in one spot as my transport travelled by.

Correct me please, Rough legged hawks only do this.... (it was far to large for a kestrel).

Location Derry rd.  just East of Trafalgar. (I think the Hawks are settling in for the winter... )

Short time later I spotted a very, very  large Redtail  near Derry road

and Fifth line Milton and finally Last Friday on the way home along the 401 near the 407 at

Trafalgar I spotted another smaller Redtail hunting  directly beside the highway at a small pond

with large weeds growing around it.. This seems early for this to be happening.  Are we in for a

Nasty winter ..............

I'm not sure about Rough-legged's hovering but the most reknowned hovering raptor is N.Harrier. They are able to hover without facing into a wind. Look for the tell-tale white rump, long tail.

The bird appeared to be too chunky and a had a broad tail similar to  a Redtail. I was amazed at the length of time that it was hovering in one spot. All I saw was a silhouette of the bird. It would be nice to be able to spot a Northern Harrier here in this area(never spotted one).

I would be happy with a Rough leg I.d. and maybe a quik image.

Title: Nasty Winter?

My relatives in Fort Erie and Port colborne were blasted with an early fall storm last week.

I am going to fort Erie this  coming weekend to help clean up, bringing a truck and a chainsaw.
People are still without power. This type of weather is not unusual for the lake Erie area..  (somewhat  Normanesque) nowhere near as creative..

I remember 1977,  the storm that moved the entire depth of fallen snow from the the frozen lake "Erie" onto Buffalo, Fort Erie and  Port Colborne. it was really nasty and at the same time fun as a kid in Grade **. Shortly after the storm we did a tour of the lake shore and were shocked at the amount of snow that had been driven onshore...

One of my High school teachers wrote a book about the event   "White Death"  by. Erno Rossi

Napper...

My uncle took alot of the photo's for the book.  I'll see if I can scrounge them up... somewhere from the depths of one of my computers....
