LOL well gotta go now.gotta get some heat going in the garage, and get my bed ready for tonight!this birding is an uncurable disease! just kidding by the way, about the garage.
i think it,s the garden shed!

We're headed out for my free Valentine birthday dinner (one of the few benefits of 'getting old' birthdays!). I was out this morning and passed by a house that has a bunch of feeders (well exposed) on the front lawn. I saw that the feeders were full but there were only a few squirrels around. All of a sudden the squirrels took off like they had been shot and guess who appeared about 5 feet over my open moon-roof?! A large redtail circled for a few seconds and landed in a tree behind the house. I would have gone back with my camera but the light is lousy; I've seen a hawk in the neighbourhood so I'll return as soon as the sun reappears! (not holding my breath tho!).

Hi Attila, I have a monopod but I've never tried it with my Canon 100-400 lens. Will it work for bird shots with a fairly heavy lens?
and Denis, get yourself a small mountain tent and a sleeping bag for the back yard! we're heading back to sunspot max so if nothing else you'll be able to see auroras from the 'doghouse'!.

thanks a lot howie!
to answer your question:
i bought a manfrotto 680 monopod today and it,s rated for 10 kg.,so plenty sturdy for a 300,or 400 lens/camera combo.i dont know what you have but check the weight capacity on it,before you try a heavy lens on.
my 2 cents.

I'm interested in a monopod as well. I use a tripod, but am finding that my new camera is heavier and is twisting around a lot on my tripod. Any suggestions?

Happy Birthday Howieh! Hope you're having a great day!

moira.
i bought the manfrotto 680 monopod, just for the 400/camera combo. like i stated it,s rated for 10 kg(22 lbs),so plenty sturdy. it,s black,4 sections,so tall enough for you, also has a wrist strap.i,ll have it at lambton,s woods tomorrow,if you,re there. got it at henry,s(oshawa) $79.00.was the only one in stock, but they have lots at their warehouse.
or you can get a sturdier tripod.mine is rated for 55 lbs. but i dont want to walk far with the tripod/gimball head/500 lens/ camera. it,s about 22-25 lbs to carry over your shoulder.
that,s why i went monopod with the smaller(400) lens.much lighter for walking.

Thanks all for the birthday wishes and a belated happy birthday to Roxanne!! Is she a birder? (probably sits at the window and thinks she's looking at the menu!).

 She's fascinated by flight and loves looking out the window at birds flying by. One day she was out on the balcony and a gull flew towards her, letting loose with some good loud cries. Roxanne came running back into the apartment and down the hallway like a bat out of hell then hid under the bed for quite awhile. She's a "scaredy cat". :)
