Title: Coolest Experience Ever... Red Wing in Hand
Post by: Rob'in'To on March 12, 2010, 04:06:05 PM
This was a total surprise for us and it happened a number of times one Spring day in High Park.  This male Red Winged Blackbird kept flying in and landing in our hand to feed.  We were so in awe that we returned the next day and he did it again...  assuming it was the same bird.  That was a lot better than those walks near the marsh/pond and they attack your head!

AHHH.... Dont you miss that. lol

Nice capture, I saw the same thing in High Park last Spring and was also surprised. I asked the guy what he was feeding him and got a stiff cold shoulder.

I'm sure we were just feeding them black oil sunflower seeds and shelled peanuts....unsalted of course! :D

Thanks!  I'd love for this to happen again.  I can't expect it though.  We were happy to get this shot as this was before the days of the digital in the house...  this was with a disposable job.

I only use black oil sunflower seed and shelled roasted peanuts (no salt).

I've had similar incidents in my travels...  seeing someone looking at a bird, feeding a bird, snapping a picture (or ten) of a bird and ever so cautiously and quietly and politely ask them what's there or whatever and get a cold nasty stare with a cold tone answer.  Some people don't like to share or it's like this invasion of their experience.

That's what I use as well. when I do decide to take some food with me.
Not sure what the big deal on revealing what your feeding the animals is. Evan with giving away a certain location at times is a well garded secret.
On my flickr page as of late I have been mapping the location so others can also have a go at a certain bird.
