Title: FRI Red Tail?
Post by: Wulff on October 23, 2006, 07:54:36 PM
Looking for confirmation.

Aside from being bedraggled and worse for the weather Im not certain myself this is a Red-Tail although thats my inclination. What's really throwing me is all the white in it. There was so much white I had todo a double take when I first saw it. Shot in yesterdays rain

On Bayly not far from Lynde Shores.
I was on my way home late yesterday afternoon after checking the usual spots when it flexed. If not for that and the resulting flash of all that white I probably would have missed it in all that gloom. I pulled over did my double take wondering about all the white I was seeing and then took about 20 pictures. While I didnt keep any of the broadside its wings had almost a diamond pattern of white spots. When it flew off I saaw its backside and didnt notice any "red" as I might have expected, but the light was bad so who knows.

Heres a couple more angles.

Showing the effects of getting rained on :)

The belly-band and dark shoulder says Red-Tail to me. Although it certainly is a very light one. "Palemale", likely the most famous red-tail is very similar to this bird. Checkout www.palemale.org (http://www.palemale.org) for a comparison.

Rough-legged hawks have that dark spot under the wings instead of the dark shoulder.

Thanks kin, nice link to. I hadnt heard the term "palemale" before and he would certainly fit the bill.
