Title: Amherst Island outing
Post by: JTF on November 26, 2006, 08:32:26 AM
Spent a few hours today as well other birder's from Ottawa; Ajax, & Quebec enjoying the great weather & good birding. In owl wood's a single Northern sawWhet Owl was located just outside the jack pine plantation just off to the left of the main trail. The jack pine plantation had many long eared owls, it took some work and patience to get a pic, see link's. No snowy pic as it was out of range and was observed too long. At the KFN property one snowy owl was observed around 12:45 pm being harrassed by a pair of crows on the ground & then a pair of gulls. It eventually flew east out over the lake and never returned. Harriers; rough-legged, & red tails were found in the many fields.

Directions:  Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593 (County Road 4, Camden East)
and drive south to the very end (Millhaven).  Turn right on Hwy. 33 and
drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The
ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the
island on the hour. Cost is $6.00 round trip. There are no gas stations on
the island.
There are restrooms on the ferry, and at the island ferry dock.
The East End K.F.N. property is at the easternmost part of the island on the

Nice full body shots of the LEO's, very good detail on the NSWO.
