hi,
I was going through some of my older pictures from the last few months and noticed this bird; it was amongst a group of long tailed ducks. I took this back on march 21, 2010 at Leslie Spit. I think it is a juvenile ring billed gull but, it seemed very big for a gull. Why is its bill solid black though? Did I get it right?

My guess would be that it's a second winter Herring Gull: the overall colour, the heavy bill and the fact that it seemed bigger than a ring-bill.

You could be right...I was originally comparing it the ring billed gull picture from the OFO checklist photo galleries. I never thought to check if it might be a herring gull. I will definitely check into it. Thanks.
