Title: Upland Sandpiper - Carden Alvar - May 7
Post by: Moira on May 10, 2010, 10:12:55 PM
The Carden Alvar is well worth the drive (in my opinion) to see some different birds.  I saw Eastern Kingbirds, Eastern Bluebirds, Eastern Towhee (pattern here!), 3 Upland Sandpipers, Meadowlark, Savannah Sparrow, Purple Finch pair, heard Soras, several Osprey nests, Common Loons, Turkey Vultures and several hawks (at which I'm brutal at identifying).  I followed the route as advised by the OFO - great day trip.

Return visit for me - got good subjects, but not great results - maybe tomorrow.  Bluebirds, meadowlarks, eastern kingbirds, towhees, etc.  It's apparently very good into June as well.  You can get the route from the OFO site, which includes the osprey nests on Canal Lake.
