Title: Is this a least flycatcher or what?
Post by: Nkwazi on May 20, 2010, 03:17:34 PM
Hi folks:

Saw this bird at East Point Park on May 17.  Studied the pictures and descriptions in Peterson, Nat Geogr and Sibley's and decided that least flycatcher was the best bet.  However, all those pictures show quite a bit more greenishness on the body than the one I took and they also show a darker marking between bill and eye, which may pic doesn't have.  Can anyone confirm/deny?  Thanks very much.

It's a very difficult bird to ID by sight. Looks good for Least to me but you really need to hear it's characteristic call. Che-bek.

That bold eye-ring and gray colour definitely point to Least.  I'm pretty sure it is, but as said, hearing the call is the best way to separate the Empidonax flycatchers.
