I am going to be in Moosonee around August 1st, and was wondering if anyone has recommendations about places to stay (prefer not too expensive) and areas to visit to look for birds.

You might want to look into some sort of boat trip out to the mouth of the river and James Bay. This might get you some good shorebird sightings. Land birds will be pretty quiet but you can hike a trail west of town, it starts near the base of the water tower, on the west side of the train tracks and near the south of where the parked trains generally are, but north of a small river bridge. The area around the start of the trail and along it a bit is a bit of an outdoor drinking venue so exercise caution as needed.
