Title: Black Terns
Post by: Margaret on July 18, 2010, 10:10:11 PM
I saw a pair of black terns at Big Creek, Long Point. New to me, had to get the books out when I got back to Brampton.
But they seem to fit the profile - they would hover over the water at this marshy area and then swoop down. Many swallows around also + 2 GBH and some pied grebe. And a pretty painted turtle.
Behind my daughter's cottage at Turkey Point - Baltimore orioles. Great, not seen by me for 2 years.
Also blue jays, N. flicker, robins by the dozen, tree swallows. And a few rabbits!

Black Terns are beautiful birds, but sadly, far less common than they used to be. :(

I think the Long Point area is one place they're doing okay:  http://www.birdsontario.org/atlas/maps.jsp?lang=en (http://www.birdsontario.org/atlas/maps.jsp?lang=en)

Hello Folks

There  are hundreds of Black Terns at Tiny Marsh.

It's only 1 hr 30 minutes from T.O. You should consider visiting.

12 minutes from our place in Tiny  Township.

We fell in love with the area a few years back its Nothing like Wasaga :!: .

p.s. another glorious day at the beach, getting a little crispy time for another refreshment.

Hi Napper, Lucky you getting a chance to visit the Marsh so often.
I have made the trip from Brampton a couple of times in the past 5 years. One time I was delighted to see a group of sandhill cranes. Maybe it's time to pay another visit.

I was just at Tiny Marsh this past weekend. The place is amazing, though I'd say it's closer to 2 hours from downtown Toronto.

Highlights were:
-3 Green Herons
-3 American Bittern
-2 Least Bittern
-2 Sandhill Cranes
-An adult Osprey on a nest with 2 juveniles
-Several Pied-billed Grebes with babies in tow
-And, of course, over 100 Black Terns

You can also check out the Piping Plovers at Wasaga Beach, which is only a few minutes away. Definitely worth a visit.
Title: Black Turn

I was out on a fishing charter this past week off Long Point and saw my first Black Turn.  Did not know what it was until I got back home and looked it up in the book.  There were two of them and they were diving in the water fishing I guess.

Another first!
