Title: Smythe Park Herons
Post by: JW Mills on July 19, 2010, 08:32:57 PM
I was at the park today (July 19) at 7 pm and saw:
I GB Heron
4 adult BCN Herons
1 juvi BCN Heron

The  Great Blue has been around for about 2 weeks.
2 adult BCN Herons are residents so I assume the juvi is theirs. The other 2 arrived recently.

That's awesome John!  I haven't been anywhere with this high humidity and Smythe is just so darn close.  I am thinking maybe tomorrow morning Angie and I might go down there.

We went this morning around 8am...  immediately saw one pair near the parking area.  We spotted the Great Blue Heron on the far west end of Smythe Park just before we drove hit the hilly driveway out.  I tried to get my camera out but I didn't take the tri-pod off so getting a shot from the car wasn't happening...  and it gave the Heron ample time to notice our car stopped, us looking at him and for him to make an exit.  Great to see though!

I took a walk thru the park today, Aug 8, at 6pm.
I did not find the juvie BCN heron, however I did see the 4 adults and the GBH.

I'm still at 2 Great Blues and 3 Black Crowns to date.  The last time I went, I got chomped on pretty good by mosquitoes and ants when photographing near one of the ponds.  One of the Black Crowns has the same feeding spot every evening I stopped in...  at the same time too.  The first time I got to watch him for a lengthy time until a Great Blue took over.  I frightened him the second time and I felt bad.  A third time I spent much less time there as I did not want to disturb his hunt/feed as with the fourth time.  It would be great to capture him with one of them big frogs in his beak...  my shots are all grainy so far.
