Title: Pileated Woodpeckers in Hamilton/Niagara
Post by: Cody on July 23, 2010, 09:57:47 PM
Does anyone know where you can see Pileated Woodpeckers in the Hamilton/Niagara area?  If anyone knows nesting locations that would also be great.

I have yet to see any this year and would love to add the species to my Year and Life list.

Thanks,
Cody

Try the Royal Botanical Garden's Cootes Paradise south shore trails- Pileated Woodpeckers have been reported there. Here in Peterborough, than you should have no trouble at all finding them almost anywhere you look! The Cootes Paradise south shore trails can be accessed at the foot of Marion Ave. where it intersects with Droman Cres., Hamilton.

Note I have never actually been to Cootes Paradise and therefore can not guarantee your sucess, but I have read species lists from that area and Pileated Woodpeckers do often show up.

Thanks for all the good information. I've been trying to be able to see a Pileated myself, with no luck whatsoever. I was wondering if you had any detailed information about possible spots near Peterborough or Ajax? It would be very nice to finally be able to see this bird, as I have had no luck in the past.

Thanks a lot.
