Title: Cicadas
Post by: Rob'in'To on July 24, 2010, 11:18:14 AM
My backyard has been quite a spot for Cicadas this summer.  I am finding them in all stages.  I also discovered that the Squirrels really enjoy them as a snack.

I actually blogged about them and posted some photos and a live video I shot of one chasing my camera around the picnic table if anybody would like to see...

Here's the stage that the Squirrels really seem to enjoy them...  plus the stage at which I shot the video.

Rob the video is funny! maybe he thought the reflection was a mate or another male?
I didn't know squirrels liked them, that's very cool, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments and viewing the video!

I actually shot 3 videos but as it chased the camera in two of them, I got too close to the edge and off the table it went.  I feel bad it became a Squirrel snack moments later but that's life in the wild, eh.  The Squirrel was pretty happy though.

Where in the city do you live, and what kind of trees do you have in your backyard?

I'm in the west end of Toronto, border to Etobicoke.  Lambton Woods is less than 5 minutes up Scarlett Road from my place.  As for trees?  I am not very good with what is what other than maples, fruit producing ones.  I do have two large cedar/pine types right behind my house.  I think they are a pine type since they have needles.  Would that be correct?  It is around this area where I have seen most of the Cicadas.  I had 3 Cicada shells stuck on the side of my deck one afternoon alone.

I'm glad you posted this, because had I seen a live one (in that stage) or the shell, before seeing the video, I would have thought it was an alien.
