Title: Red Squirrel and Red eared Slider turtle at Lake Wabukayne
Post by: Bird Brain on September 13, 2010, 05:26:40 PM
Hi everyone.  I was at Lake Wabukayne today between 9:30am-12:30pm.

Saw a Red Squirrel at the NW corner of the lake and a Red eared Slider turtle at the East end of the lake - bottom right corner of the dam, sitting on the side concrete.

Lake Wabukayne:  NE corner of Glen Erin Dr./Windwood Dr., behind the condo and school.

Too bad about the turtle, I hope they don't breed.

Elsewhere in Mississauga, a Snapping Turtle recently laid 23 eggs - witnessed by a lot of people!!!  Apparently now a lot of the shells are open so not sure if the babies hatched then headed for the water or whether some predators got at the eggs or a bit of both?  Would have loved to see the baby snappers!

Yeah, snapping turtles are so cool when they are laying eggs. I've seen snapping turtle at erindale park twice, but only in the water.

If you get the chance, please remove any red-eared sliders from the wild if you are able to do so, and take them to a rescuer, wildlife rehab, vets, etc...

They are an invasive species, they are surviving our winters and most likely breeding.  They pose a great threat to our native turtle species.
Thanks
