Title: Feeders in Trinity Bellwoods Park
Post by: Andreas Jonsson on October 20, 2010, 02:29:09 PM
On the weekend I placed some bird feeders is Trinity Bellwoods Park, and the birds have already found them. In this thread I'll post some updates from these feeders.

Edit: As of October 31 the feeding station includes a sunflower seed feeder, a thistle seed sack, a suet cage and a metal cylinder with peanuts.

Please feel welcome to come by and have a look if you are in the area, and contribute to the feeding station if you like, but keep it neat and tidy please. The feeders are located on the west side of the dog bowl in the north end of the park, just east of the John Gibson House. Look for the feeders near a group of conifer trees.

There are a ton of squirrels in the park, but I have received some good advice here on the forum, and so far my feeders have not had any squirrel visits as far as I can tell. I've hung the feeders as far as possible from trunks and branches using fishing lines (which I am assuming the squirrels don't like to climb).

Yesterday there were mainly Chickadees at the feeders. Today, I found a quadruple of sparrows underneath one feeder, including a House, Song, White-throated and Fox Sparrow. Fox and Song sparrow are new for the park.

Full list observed at around noon:

3   Black-capped Chickadee
2   Hermit Thrush
10   American Robin
1   Fox Sparrow
1   Song Sparrow
1   White-throated Sparrow
5   Dark-eyed Junco
1   House Sparrow

Hi Andreas,

Nice meeting you at the TOC meeting. In our yard in the Bathurst/Sheppard area, I've had one male and one female Purple Finches, with the female still hanging around. I've had two Fox Sparrows hanging out with a small flock of White-throated Sparrows, too.

Nice meeting you too Leslie. You seem to have the same variety of birds as I do.

Today I did a quick stop at the feeders just before sunset. I was in a bit of a rush, so there could well have been more birds. Some new birds have arrived, White-crowned Sparrows and more Fox sparrows.

Early this afternoon there was lots of activity at the feeders. Some new male Purple Finches showing up (before I've only seen females).

A squirrel bit off the fishing line hanging the suet while I was watching. That means none of the feeders are squirrel safe anymore. I really thought the 40-pound line I was using would be thick enough...

I didn't post yesterday, birds where pretty much the same, with a high score of 6 Fox Sparrows.

Today, the first Pine Siskins of the season had arrived. I didn't stay long, so the counts are low.

That is so cool Andy, did you just put the feeders in wooded areas and can anyone put feeders anywhere in a public park like that? I'm curious because I wanted to place some feeders in our wooded areas here at Marie Curtis but I'm not sure about the laws/by-laws etc.
I did notice that there were some nesting boxes (some new and quiet large!) I'm wondering if they were for owls..

I probably shouldn't say this, but don't know whether it is allowed. I figure as long as I keep it discrete and tidy, it won't disturb anyone.

Black-capped Chickadee and American Goldfinch

I've started to bring my camera out to the feeders and has been able to get some decent shots. I've also updated some of the earlier post with photos.

I visited the feeders pretty much daily last the past week, but I wasn't able to come back here to write about it. This report is from yesterday. The number of House Sparrows has increased, and migrants, such as White-throated Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco appear to be in fewer numbers. I haven't seen the Fox Sparrows for about a week, so they are likely gone south. Two new species visited yesterday, a Hairy Woodpecker and an American Tree Sparrow. Full list below:

1   Hairy Woodpecker
5   Black-capped Chickadee
1   Red-breasted Nuthatch

The diversity of birds have not been changing much recently, although the number of House Sparrows is increasing. It's becoming a problem because the seeds I sprinkle on the ground don't last very long.

I wonder how long the migrants will stay around. I assume that in the midst of winter all but the Woodpeckers, Chickadees, Nuthatches and House Sparrows will have left.

Here's a video of a Downy Woodpecker on the suet feeder:

I've received amazing feedback from people in the park; everytime I visit someone walks up to me and tells me how much they enjoy spending time around the feeders. It seems, people just love birds, birdwatchers or not. Today one gentleman offered money to support the feeding station; I suggested he help out filling up the ever emptying feeders instead.

While today's visit was rather late (almost sunset) and the number of birds were low, there was one new visitor, a Mourning Dove.

I wasn't able to fill the feeders as frequently over the Christmas holidays. Seems like the White-throated Sparrows and the White-crowned Sparrow might have moved on, at least I couldn't see them today. In the early afternoon the following birds were present:

Wow Andreas .. nice shots!  I've never seen an Albino squirrel before .  You said 'one of' so I gather there is more than one .. how nice!  Question re bird counts.
I have many many birds at our backyard feeders.  Since I can't tell them apart .. how can count how many of each species ?  One day we had 9 species at one time, but I can't hazard a guess as to how many times the same bird came back (and I would have counted it multiple times).

You can be sure I was thinking Purple Finch more than once that day! I don't have experience with hybrids either. All I know is that House Finches can be very variable. If anyone reading this has experience from unstreaked individuals, please let us know.

With the arrival of spring migration I'm calling it quits for the feeders in the park for this year. I might keep a single sun-flower seed feeder in the park for another month or so, and I will continue to keep an eye on the feeder area during my bird walks throughout the spring (see here: http://outdoorontario.net/birds/phpBB/v ... php?t=7808 (http://outdoorontario.net/birds/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=7808), and my blog).

It's been an interesting experience running these feeders, and I want to thank everybody who came by and supported me. However, I must admit that the commitment was somewhat exhausting. Would be great to find a partner in the area to share the work load for next winter.

The long staying White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows are still visiting the area (seen today), and new visitors are arriving every day (Song Sparrows, Fox Sparrows, American Tree Sparrows etc.).
