Title: Lambton Woods
Post by: ravynne40 on November 24, 2010, 10:43:50 PM
Today I ventured out to Lambton Woods, totally unsure as to what I would find (hoping for Merlin) but that didn't happen, but I did get my "chickadee" shot. usually when I get the chickadee's they are just a little fuzzy but today I think I lucked out
There were Cardinals, Blue Jays, Goldfinches, Downies, all kinds of ducks, a sleeping Heron and a hawk (I think redtail) I will post pictures of him later after I process. He was chasing the ducks!!

Also a strange duck, which I thought to be a black duck..but it looked very "mallardy" to me..

Last time I saw the Merlin I was deep in the woods, well off the paths.  I also found a Red Bellied Woodpecker outside his nest in a Birch Tree.  I got a few pics of him but haven't had time to post anything.

I was at Lamton on Tuesday and saw a number of Golden Crowned Kinglets.  Too tough to shoot, always moving.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments,  this is definitely a place I will go to again....with seed!! The chickadees were trying to land on my camera..what a hoot.
I felt like I was transposed into a different time and place and forgot a lot of my troubles..which was nice for a change, it was almost "magical".

That is EXACTLY how I feel about Lambton.  A rough day at work quickly disappears when I stop in there on the way home.  A lot of regulars (Cardinals, Jays, Woodpeckers) and then occasional surprises.  I searched all last winter for the Pileated and to no luck in sighting him.  But 4 Common Mergansers (a first for me last year almost made up for it) with their funky heads.

Love the dee photo, little cuties! The duck though really dark is a Mallard, the orange bill with dark spots confirms ID. It's crazy the amount of variance in some birds, I just photographed a duck that was almost a bright orange colour and it ended up being a Mallard too ;-)
Title: Hybrid duck?
Post by: thouc on November 25, 2010, 06:32:04 PM
The duck doesn't seem to fit either with Mallard or Black Duck. The bill looks too bright orange for either of them, the body is too dark for Mallard, but a Black Duck should have a clearly lighter color on the head, which the bird in the picture doesn't have. The speculum is bright blue, which indicates Mallard, but lacks white borders, which indicates Black Duck. My guess is that it's a hybrid.

Thanks again, Thomas, yes I agree with you, sadly I hit enter before I could type in that it was a hybrid and was too tired to edit! lol
Rob'In'To i'm thinking i need to go back again real soon, haha work has been very stressful
Lovetobird, I have been waiting to get the "perfect" Dee picture for some time it has been one of my goals..now I need to set more new goals :)

Thanks Meghan, I was very relaxed, and had the time to spend and just hang out in the one area and before I knew it 4 hours had passed, I did not feel the cold, and came home very stress free and happy.
p.s...I saw a hawk again LOL..its like i'm a magnet for these guys...of course..its always when nobody else is around...why is that?

Thanks Moira I'm going back with two cameras a tripod..and gonna watch while the 'dees' hop onto the big cam and see if i can snap a shot of them, I think it might be fun!
