Title: Various Bird Photos from Up North
Post by: lovetobird on December 01, 2010, 11:36:18 PM
Went up north last weekend to visit family and of course did some birding. My Nanny's place located in the middle of the Boreal forest west of Cochrane was super productive. All the images were taken there except the N Hawk Owl which was located just south of Cochrane on the trip home. I was once again somehow managed not to see an Evening Grosbeak, they are my new nemesis bird ;-)

Well done! Thanks for Sharing. I love the "look" the owl is giving you.
Maybe you are birding in the daytime not the evening, so that's why you haven't spotted an evening grosbeak (LOL)!

Hey Nathan

You did a Weekend trip to Cochrane? That is quite the drive! We've been thru there many times (19 years) on our way to points West.

Only during the summer of course to visit the outlaws outside of Atikokan.

Nice pics . I like your close ups of the Whiskey Jacks.

re: Evening grosbeaks, I thought I read a thread somewhere that  were some spotted in Barrie about a week ago?

Thanks everyone

@farmer - I'll have to try that and see if I have better luck ;-)

@Napper - it was a four day trip to Timmins and Cochrane and was a whirlwind tour;-).  There are Grosbeaks in the Barrie area I just have yet to see them ;-(

@Irene - From what I've read the name came from a aboriginal word  "Wisekejack" which means a mischievous, transforming spirit who liked to play tricks on people. If you say Gray Jay to most people up there they have no clue what you're talking about, even Canada Jay doesn't carry meaning to most.

@Gary - A trip up to Algonquin Park in the winter season and you'll usually see all of these species minus the Hawk Owl, but there's been one of those in Orillia the last couple years so you may be able pick it up on the drive to the park.

It is an anglicization of the Cree word weesageechak.

Thanks....I have not been up to Algonquin since late spring this year, and definitely have not been up there in the winter for a few years now...I'll have to get up there soon! Beautiful birds!
