Title: Some more shorebirds in CA
Post by: aviator on December 12, 2010, 02:55:06 PM: Seeing as I can't birdwatch today I'm posting some more. The Cinnamon Teal and White-faced Ibis were firsts for me. Hope you enjoy too!

Post by: thouc on December 12, 2010, 05:11:57 PM: Nice spotting the Snowy Egret, it looks black-billed and smaller than the Great Egret so I think you are right.

The four at the front in the first picture might be Western Sandpipers with their bills down in the mud.

The one to the right of the Avocet in the second picture looks like a Pied-billed Grebe.

It's a Am Coot in the second image beside the Avocet, you guys are rocking the ID's!

Post by: thouc on December 12, 2010, 07:01:57 PM: The coloration seems to fit with Am. Coot. I thought it was too small compared to the Avocet, but it might be the angle making it look smaller.

Post by: aviator on December 12, 2010, 08:14:14 PM: Thanks everyone for the information. With the benefit of additional photos I can add that the largest bird in no1 is a long billed curlew of which there were many. The small birds are Western Sandpipers but the flyin is maybe a Dunlin
There is an American coot, and the only reason I took the Snowy Egret picture was because the 3 birds were alone in that pond. There were many Green winged and Cinnamon Teal and even a Blue winged teal in one of the ponds but not close enough to get all three in one pic
